Dear All, in the late 1960s, the encounter group became a popular method for promoting the ideals of the Human Potential Movement. Encounter groups and human development or personal growth workshops of many kinds blossomed over the next decade, then declined; many of the methods were integrated into tighter personal growth programs in the 1980s, but they were less well known.
At any rate, many of these groups used a series of guided exercises, experiential, of many types, the active parts spaced with opportunities for discussion and sharing. They offered an excellent vehicle for helping people to learn about self-awareness, interpersonal problem-solving, and communications.
(Inexperienced leaders sometimes didn't know what to do with more problematic participants, and publicity was given to the occasional "casualties" of such experiences. )
Anyway, I have some materials that I could sell inexpensively to someone who was using this approach in adult education. Please let me know if you're interested. Warmly, Adam Blatner
