Hi Cynthia,
Perhaps you are thinking of Chaim Kellmer, who was raised in a Hasidic
home/community. They were friends, and along with other young men of the
day, founded the "Religion of Encounter" and the House of Encounter, which
was based on the principles of joyful service, anonymity, sharing and
charity. It is said a great deal of singing went on in that house. In the
Hasidic tradition, prayers are chanted or "davvened", which is a form of
deeply expressed emotional and devotional prayer. Marineau's biography is a
good resource for some of this info, which you may already be well
acquainted with.
