Dear GroupTalkers –

A few months ago, there was a lively discussion on GroupTalk about the use of psychodrama to work with individuals with trauma conditions.  At that time,   some GroupTalkers expressed concern that a leading figure in the trauma recovery world had raised questions about the safety and efficacy of using psychodrama to facilitate trauma recovery.

Several possible ways to address these concerns were advanced.    One that I suggested was the possibility of developing and disseminating a consensus paper on key principles or best practices in using psychodrama to work with trauma.  I offered to organize an informal discussion at the upcoming ASGPP Conference in Philadelphia so that interested individuals could meet to explore whether this might be a viable option and, if yes, so we could begin to plan how best to develop such a paper.

Several participants on GroupTalk responded to my earlier posting:

Patti Desert

Anath Garber Barron

Kate Hudgins

Connie Lawrence

Rosalie Minkin

Ed Schreiber

Rebecca Walters

I have been corresponding with the individuals above, as well as representatives from ASGPP, to organize a discussion at the Conference.  After liaison with ASGPP and the hotel and communication with the individuals listed above, the discussion is scheduled to occur on:

Saturday, April 17, from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. in The Library (a room on the lobby level of the hotel).

Please consider this an open invitation to anyone who would like to join this discussion.   Our purpose will be to explore the feasibility of developing a consensus paper on key principles or best practices in using psychodrama to work with issues of trauma recovery.

For planning purposes, we would like to know who is interested in participating.   So, i f you would like to join this discussion, please respond to this email.  We will also have a notice about the discussion at the registration area at the Conference, but it would be helpful to have an idea of how many are coming (for purposes of developing a workable agenda for our 90-minute discussion).

I have volunteered to prepare a draft agenda and will be seeking ideas for what we need to cover in our discussion.   Some questions that come to mind include, but are certainly not limited to, the following:

Content/Format Questions:

What is the purpose of a consensus paper on psychodrama and trauma recovery?

What is the importance of value of such a paper?

Who is/are the intended audience(s)?

What are the most important messages or key points we want to communicate?

What are some possible formats for the paper?

How will we disseminate the paper?

Process Questions:

What will be our process for drafting the paper?

How will we go about eliciting review and comment and achieving consensus among psychodramatists on the key messages or points in the paper?

What will be our immediate next steps moving forward (i.e., who will do what in what timeframes)?

Please let us know of your interest in participating in this discussion – and please offer your suggestions for discussion questions or other ideas for moving this process forward.

Best wishes,

Cathy
