Prolonged Exposure

Hi David,

Good question. PE typically refers to direct exposure. However, in my work direct exposure is often either impractical or clinically unadvisable. ie: when someone is dealing with a sexual asault, facing their attacker. In such cases, role-play can be used, as long as safety precautions are in place. PE plays off of the theory that by triggering the flight/fight/freeze machanism and learning to tolerate the anxiety, clients can overcome it. When a direct role play is "too much," I use role-plays that incorporate archetypes such as victim, vampire, child within, hero etc. We develop a role-play using the light and dark attributes of these archetypes. Thus, the client my not directly be exposed to the traumatic event but they can be virtually exposed to a scenario that triggers similar feelings.

I use a deck of archetype cards developed by Carline Myss (www.myss.com). Great website !

Thanx for asking.
Eric

Does Role Play fit into the accepted literature and definition of PE?
