I just finished a workshop in taiwan that is an advanced TSM
workshop. While all of you hear me endlessly blah blah blah about
containment containment containment, this workshop is about how and
when to put the protagonist in the victim and perpetrator roles
safely. It was a very powerful workshop and taught students how to
DO abreaction with a containing double and prescriptive roles with
the protagonist in role reversal into "wounded child" NOT victim so
that the wounded child can be rescued. The main thing that must be
demonstrated is that the protagonist CAN rescue the wounded child
from the adult role BEFORE they are ever role reversed into that
role. What that means in neurobiological roles is that they can do
it without being re-traumatized, that they can do it by staying
conscious and in a state of full spontaneity and not have the brain
overwhelmed by too much affect.. ONLY then, can they be role
reversed into the wounded child role and feel the full experience of
being rescued by the adult self and brought fully out of fhe
dissociated place and integrated into the adult self.
Most trauma therapies, ie Judith Hermann, have stages of treatment.
Stage 1 is stablization, stage 2 is working through and does call for
re-experiencing in some form or other. what psychodrama has been
guilty of is going directly to reexperiencing and not doing the stage
1 work and thus leading to retraumatization by going for abreaction
while the protagonist is in dissociated and unchosen regression and
abreaction. that is why TSM always does scene 1 of Prescriptive
roles of containment, observation and restoration that actually put
the protag is a state of researchable spontaneity.
