Just saw this on LinkedIn - and I believe this is the same Paul Hare who is
known for his work in psychodrama. I did not know Paul but was acquainted
with his wife June.

A. Paul Hare, died 31st October 2009

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As you know, Paul was diagnosed in early October as being in the final phase
of CMML, a rare form of leukemia.

The outpouring of your concern, and appreciation for his work, was very
moving. Two weeks ago, I visited him in Israel and although he was in
extreme pain, he wanted me to relay or read to him all of your kind words.

Those of you who knew him personally will appreciate that he showed
tremendous spirit and courage through the recent painful weeks, as he grew
so weak he could rarely move unassisted. Friday, in his apartment, he did
walk independently but fell and suffered a blow to the head. June, his wife,
reports that Paul joked with the ambulance technicians on the way to the
hospital. The head injury proved traumatic; he slipped into a coma, and died
peacefully in less than a day. He was 86.

A. Paul Hare was Emeritus Professor of Sociology in the Department of
Sociology & Anthropology, Ben-Gurion University, Israel, and an affiliate of
the University's Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research.

Following completion of his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1951, he
held teaching and research positions at Princeton University, Wellesley
College, Yale University, and Harvard University before settling in
Pennsylvania to teach at Haverford College. He left the US for South Africa
in 1973 to be Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Cape Town,
where he met his current wife, June Rabson Hare. They immigrated to Israel
in 1980 where Paul joined the faculty of Ben-Gurion University.

For 60 years Paul taught and conducted research about social interaction
while applying the knowledge in different settings. As a sociologist engaged
in social action, he participated in the American civil rights and peace
movements; the early years of US Peace Corps; 1960s leadership development
efforts in various African nations; challenges to apartheid in South Africa;
1970s mediation interventions in Cypress; and a variety of community
development efforts in a host of nations.

He published extensively, was Editor of "Sociological Inquiry," as well as
the founder and first Editor of "Israel Social Science Research," and wrote
or edited, alone or with others, 35 books, on a range of topics, including
small groups, creativity in group process, SYMLOG, functional analysis,
dramaturgical interpretation, conflict resolution, mediation, nonviolent
protest, and peace activism (the latter informed by his Quaker values). Some
of you may not be aware that Paul published a brief memoir, entitled "Funny
Things" (2009, available through Amazon.com).

He is survived by his wife June Rabson Hare of Beer Sheva, Israel; their two
sons-Simon Hare of Boston, MA, and Andrew Hare of Beer Sheva, Israel; four
children from a previous marriage-Sharon E. Hare of Los Angeles, CA, Diana
Hare of Philadelphia, PA, Mally O'Hare of Williamsburg, MA, Christopher Hare
of Albuquerque, NM; and two granddaughters-Eva Hare of Chicago, IL, and Lulu
Diaz-Hare of Boston, MA.

If you have special memories of Paul, please rush them to June
(junehare at bgumail.bgu.ac.il) because she is planning a service for Paul
early next week.
