Linda, I think your cautions about college campuses are well spoken. I suppose it very much matters what the campus is like. I am very curious about why people felt the conference at the Poconos was not a success. I was just returning to the psychodrama world after several years off, and so was not privy to the financial or other issues, but I personally found it a lot of fun because everyone ate together and roomed together.
 The fall 2009 drama therapy conference is to be held in White Plains...close enough for commuting from NYC. I wonder if that might not also be an option, holding the conference near a major city, but not in it, so that overnight accommodations are far less costly and also in a place where many people would commute.

        I went to the drama therapy conference the year they tried to move it to a college and I experienced several problems:
        1- the dorm was very very bad for accomodation (I'm not that picky really) but there was no air conditioning, the matress was about 3 inches thick, the windows had no screens so that you couldn't open the windows without getting bitten by lots (lots) of bugs.  Eventually, I needed to move into a cheap hotel because I couldn't get a refund on housing).  I had to share the bathroom with everyone on the floor and the bathrooms weren't clean.  Summer school students were there so it wasn't just ASGPP people. 

        2-I ended up having to rent a car because there were no hotels or motels within walking distance of the campus.  Also it wasn't easy to get food without driving to a restaurant something I wasn't counting on.
        3-I ended up having to pay for a hotel another extra expense.
        4- I was on crutches that weekend and the workshops were spread all across what seemed like a very large campus area with little accomodation for someone with mobility issues  So, I was continually hobbling across campus and late to everything.  Since we have many members who are a bit older it's something we should consider carefully.  
        5-If we decided to have the conference at a college campus then make sure that there are hotels nearby, it's got good transportation from the airport, there are several food choices nearby, and the workshops are not spread out so far apart from each other it's not too much of a hike across campus for those with mobility issues.  
        Right now, I wouldn't want to have these problems again at a conference.  I';ve been to many conferences at retreat centers where they provide a meal plan with the room fee and those have worked out well but there were never that many breakout rooms.  When we went to Estes Park, CO we had about 8 breakout rooms but they were far apart and required many walks up steep hills.
        I'm open to the consideration, but I dont have a lot of positive things to say about it right now.  Thanks for listening.  Linda

            Rebbecca,what a creative idea: Lesley college may be a particularly good target as it has a student body interested in what ASGPP.can offe.

          Most colleges do not have their students empty their dorm rooms during spring break, so if the goal is to have cheap accommodations on campus, spring break isn't going to work. But many schools end the first week in May...so directly after that would be an option I would think. I would urge Ed, Rosalie and anyone else interested to do a little research about what is possible.  Ed, you teach at Lesley...why not find out if we could put on a conference there at the end of the school year.

            Dear Ed:
            I suggest that you speak to the NADT people.They changed their cultural conserve. They took a chance and rescheduled their conferences during the summer for several years. It nearly destroyed their organization. Their numbers went way down, and their conferences became smaller and smaller. 
            I don't think that as an organization we can afford to do this.
            If you want to have a conference at a college campus then I suggest that you do it during the spring break in March or April. that would be less of a change and one that would be possible to organize.
            Another possibility is to change the cultural conserve in terms of when the conference is scheduled at a hotel. There is a period of time called the shoulder season in February. Hotels are cheaper and more available. That is why AGPA schedules their conferences then.
            Also, EGPS did their conference at Riverside church in NYC, a great venue. No one had to bother with hotel rooms etc. That is also a thought and to let people fend for themselves, providing information on cheap housing.
            There are lots of ways to be creative in tough financial times, but I don't think that having a summer conference is one of them. Justr mu thoughts.
