Here is an email from his wife, Jackie:

Dear Friends:

Please forgive me if this is a duplicate message.  I’m trying to contact all
of our friends, and I’m losing track of who I have contacted.

Alton had a massive stroke in his left brain early Thursday morning.  It has
affected his right arm, leg, mouth and eye.  It also affected his speech.

He has made remarkable strides since yesterday morning.  He is trying to say
a few words, using his right hand more, and walked around the room with
help.  Eating is still a problem.  He can feed himself, but he gets food
caught in the right side of his mouth and doesn’t know it.  So I have to
monitor every bite to make sure he doesn’t aspirate the food.

He did well in his speech therapy, PT and OT sessions.  His sense of humor
has returned.

By noon today, we should know which rehab facility he will move to.  The
entire therapy team and I are strongly recommending that he stay at
Swedish.  The insurance company might balk, since this is the most expensive
program.  When he moves to rehab, our schedule will be much more regular, so
that will be easier on all of us.

The kids and I have decided to restrict visits until he improves a bit
more.  He gets over-stimulated quite easily and tires quickly.  I hope you
understand, as I know that many of you are concerned and want to see him.

I’ll try to keep you updated as he makes progress.
