Looking through a cartoon book of Roz Chast's work, I found this, which shows us the social atom of a cereal box. I'm going to use it as one of the slides for a talk about mandala's I'm preparing to give as a plenary presentation to the American Art Therapy Association annual meeting in Dallas around November 20 weekend. The social atom has value as one form of mandala, a way to represent one's own perception of one's life field, and there are variations that can thicken this. Drawing it rather than talking about it offers a more intuitive form of self-presentation, which then invites the therapist (or other group members) to see the world as the client sees it. (It's equally useful for personal growth, without the contract of "therapy.")
(The talk itself speaks to various ways drawing mandalas can foster feelings of being centered, to consider layers of personality and life (as concentric circles), to think in terms of cycles, as a cross-section of a spiral, boundaries, balance, depth of source, and other metaphors of mind.)
