Re:Puppetry: I have made use of "furry auxiliaries" ( animal puppets ) for
many years as props, to hold roles when I had insufficient human
auxiliaries, to put distance between the person taking the role the role
itself, and many other purposes related to psychodrama. Joe Kenna and I
presented a w/shop at the local MAC/ASGPP mtg on the use of "furry
auxiliaries" . Beyond that, I always take one on my arm to make hospital
visits and total strangers always engage immediately in lobby, on elevator,
and , of course the patients are immediately cheered up - carrying on
complete conversations and sharing with the puppet character to which I am
giving voice and movement . Effective, fun, and heart-warming. Sounds like
you found a lively and creative way to use these "auxiliaries",too, Gayle:)

I participated in a puppet show this weekend. A rabbi friend with a passion
for environmental issues and puppetry asked me to collaborate, on a story
she wrote from Bible with interpretations for saving the environment, and
climate change project she is promoting in the local community. Never been
part of puppet show before.
It was such great fun!
I helped her tweak different parts of it to enhance audience participation
to dialogue with the main puppet, which people did quite a bit. This was
with an adult audience. I also took on voices of 5 different characters and
a few different roles with props and smaller puppets...things we never had
time to work all out in detail together. Expanding on them was just like
auxiliary work. It was an easy segue from psychodrama to puppetry. And our
first show was a spontaneity test, as we never did have a complete
rehearsal! It went well, with some glitches to work out. As the "not ready
for prime-time" show develops, we hope to work toward more dialoguing within
the group, and perhaps time and space to maybe have audience in role play.
Will see how it evolves.
I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun doing a volunteer
activity!

Hi there,
I have recently been working with some people who are helping me set
up some groups in their area - which is 45 - 60 minutes from where I
am. Still local-ish. These groups will be professional supervision for
managers and school principals and others. The other is a psychodrama
experiential training type group run as group work, leadership and
coaching for managers and leaders in the same area.
These two people are doing a lot of connecting me into their networks.
They also feel a great reciprocal value in my working with them and
their colleagues, peers and others. I am conscious that when the group
runs later in the year that I owe them - so to speak.
My request is this: What are others norms and ways of repaying,
supporting, thanking people who provide this kind of much need support?
My thoughts without decisions range from: 1) Discount for the program
(how much) 2) Free placement when the group reaches a certain number
3) Discount on other programs or free other programs.
Thoughts? reponses?
Cheers guys

ah this is, for me, an ever haunting spectre when I have to do all of
that negotiating using the sociometry networks of helpers/students/
participants......I have found over much hard learnings, many models,
much too much over giving, peoples resentments, never enoughs,my own
money issues, argh......that I offer two free scholarships to the
people who organize the workshop. They can then decide how it is
divided up among the many people that have contributed to co-creating
the workshop. That keeps me one step distance from the process.
then I am very thankful and often bring small gifts to give out to
many people.
I will be curious to hear how others have handled this. I am now
turning all of my biz negotiations over to an agent to do for me and
so will be out of all of these kind of questions, much to my delight
and relief. some benefits of age I think.....

I find that these sort of arrangements, even when expressed as "thank yous"
elevate the status of the persons within the target group where you are the
facilitator and makes another area of role complexity for the group who have
assembled for supervision or training. Of course, you are pleased to have
their assistance. They do benefit by having the workshops in their area,
decreasing their travel time/expense and they benefit from having the
trainer of their choice. These are no "light" considerations, Peter.
As a professional field we have hardly done the work that is needed to
sort out the pitfalls which exist from having a method which uses projection
onto others, scant de-roling, while also, as trainers, gate keeping for a
profession all balled up with the occasional director of deeply therapeutic
work which takes place in the training setting.
I think it further complicates things to compensate trainees via discounts
or other means when they assist with organizing training events. What I
prefer as a trainer, if someone wants me to come to their area, is ask for a
contact person in their area, outside of the target group, and do my own
negotiating and arrangements. The students can beat the bushes for
participants if they want the workshop to go, but this is not compensated.
One of the greatest "gifts" we can give students is the ability to maintain
boundaries which allow them full access to the student/learner role.
The Toronto Centre has as part of their training program a "training
assistant" role which is clearly defined and time limited. This might be
the way to proceed so that the person knows they are not in the workshop as
a trainee, but in a training assistant capacity. The role shifts around and
is part of a level of training, past the auxiliary ego level.
I write a letter of thank you when a person has gone beyond the usual. And,
when that person graduates the training program I have many ways to add to
their congratulations.
