This 100 page book describes a grant funded program by the Virginia
Foundation for the Humanities, Center on Violence and Community at
the University of Virginia. Dr Kate Hudgins and Dr Roberta
Culbertson received the grant following 9/11 to design, develop,
demonstrate, and evaluate a one week training program for community
workers. They were joined by TSM Team Members Dr Jeanne Burger, Mimi
Cox, and Catherine Wilson as well as UVA Humanities Scholars in
literature, history and religion to present a program that helped
members debrief from the 9/11 experience. Edward Hug, MSW wrote the
introductory chapter on the neurobiology of violence and PTSD. The
local Charlottesville Playback Troupe that included Larry Goldstein,
and Mecca Burns started the program on the first night.

Guided by the clinical system of the Therapeutic Spiral Model and
informed by a variety of humanities texts and exercises, the combined
team of clinicians and humanities scholars produced a program to help
survivors of violence through historical contextualizing, theatre,
poetry, music, and art, while also teaching about capacity building
and conflict resolution. Action Against Trauma seeks to help
clinicians that their learning out of the therapy room---and to help
scholars leave the classroom---in order to apply their learning to
community meetings, local organizations, and citizens groups trying
to work in post-trauma environments.
