Moreno History (sort of)

Dear Michael and others on Grouptalk,
Ladino is the language spoken by what's called Sephardic Jews, i.e. Jews
who settled in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. Just like
Yiddish, an idiom spoken by European Jews that contains a mixture of
German and Hebrew, Ladino is a concoction of Spanish and Hebrew.
I was born in Jerusalem and knew many people who spoke Ladino although
my ancestors were local and spoke Hebrew and Arabic. I suppose they
originally came from Spain and had a rich culture that survives somehow
to this day. The word "Sephardic" comes from the Hebrew word "Sepharad"
which means Spain. When I first read about J. L. Moreno I was thrilled
to learn the names of his close relatives as they were typically
Sephardic names.
And since you live in Austria, perhaps you can find a way to hear a
great singer (Israeli living in Germany) named Esther Ofarim with
beautiful renditions of Ladino songs, one of which is even on Youtube,
named "Adios Querida."
Is this information more than you bargained for?
Hasta luego,
