conference reflections

I liked the experience of the recent St. Louis conference...especially the opportunities to connect. One of the really strong reasons I attend is to have time with colleagues I have grown to appreciate over the years...hanging out, connecting and updating , and just smiling into each others eyes. I got to go to a great workshop on writing and a collaborative process with other writers and a terrific workshop related to self care. What a fit for where I was in the moment!

Celebrating achievements is high on my list so the Awards dinner or event is a must see, and this year the tributes were exceptional and elevating. Next year I understand that the Awards dinner, if it is a dinner, will be included in the package price.

Every hotel that contracts with a conference group requires a certain amount of food service events (a monetary figure), and the organization can identify what those specific breakdowns will be when finalizing their contract. The is common practice for hoteliers across the globe. The organizations can specify dietary concerns which need to be met. They are used to this and offer far more options that you would imagine.

At the Ritz, my room costs were shared with others: When two to a room it was 82.50, when there were three of us it was around $60. and when there were five of us in the room is was $30.50...so reasonable, and doable, with two queen beds and a rollaway. The pool has full service showers, hairdryers, etc so we always had an option when the bathroom got busy. It is harder and more expensive for people who are attending on their own and haven't gotten the connection to get a roommate. We could do better at helping people share spaces. I would love another venue which is laid back and less commercial in its orientation, like a ranch or retreat center.

Thanks o this years committee for a job very well done. Ann Hale
