Playback Theater, Sociodrama and Psychodrama are all action methods that can be used to tell the individual or collective stories of the participants in a group. Playback Theatre and Sociodrama are used in groups as action communication, enabling participants and observers to explore and share their insights and experience with each other. Playback and Sociodrama can be used in schools, churches, public venues, and community gatherings. Psychodrama, although it has many uses, has been regarded as a form of group psychotherapy, and is often more limited in its venue. This workshop will underscore the differences and similarities of these three forms. Playback offers individuals the chance to see their own stories played back by others, and one person's story often elicits another's. Sociodrama, on the other hand, offers group members the opportunity to explore a social or political issue of common concern to the group members through involving themselves in guided dramatic action and the trying on of different roles.

P articipants will learn and practice some basic forms of Playback Theatre: Fluid sculptures, Tableau, Pairs, Scenes, and Chorus. Participants will learn and practice some basic forms of Sociodrama including: Sociodramatic Warmups, Sociodramatic Encounters, Sociodramatic CIrcle, Sociodramatic Role Play and Living Newspaper. We will experience stories in different forms, noting where each might be the most appropriate modality. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice these forms with each other, as well as see them demonstrated.

Beginners will become more conversant with the forms highlighted in the workshop. More experienced people, more practiced in one form more than the other, can explore different options for bringing stories to life. Come to this weekend, bringing your curiosity and willingness, and enter the richness of action learning!

All levels are welcome. Overnight accomodations are available. CEU's available.

Early registration discount available if you register by October 9, 2008.

Psychodramatic interventions that 'go with the resistance', honor defenses and are attuned to sociometry create the safety that help change barriers into open doors. This encourages individual and group warm up to spontaneity, healing and change. This workshop is especially useful for those working with adolescents, the chemically dependent and 'acting out' clients.

Together we will explore what is resistance? How does it get in the way? How does it serve us? How can we help our clients move beyond it? Participants will learn and practice: Sociometric exercises that that increase group cohesion and safety; The Use of the Empty Chair Doubling in group and individual work; The power of role reversal; Sociodrama. Participants will be taught a series of experiential structures that assist in helping reluctant clients make choices towards change.

            Overnight accomodations and CEU's available.

Early registration discount available if you register by November 6, 2008.

Childwork/Child Play: Action Methods with Children

with Rebecca Walters, MS, TEP, LMHC, LCAT

            October 23-25
            Naples, Florida

Psychodrama is a natural and powerful method for helping troubled, abused and t raumatized children tell their stories, safely express strong feelings and try out new behaviors and roles. This professional training will offer participants the opportunity to learn adaptations of the psychodramatic method that work especially well with groups of children ages seven though twelve. Many of these structures can be adapted to work with individuals and families. Participants will explore and experience structures that allow for the safe acting out of children's hopes, fears and difficulties through the use of fairytales, storytelling, sociodrama, personal life stories and group-created stories. Participants will practice variations of therapeutic action techniques that work with children such as: doubling, multiple doubling, role playing, Playback theater, inner and outer circle, family sculpting and role training for new behavior. The use of group ritual and structures for safety and containment will be demonstrated. Ways to address the difficulties inherent in using psychodrama with children will be discussed.

Students at all levels of experience are welcomed. Overnight accomodations are available.

Continuing education units (CEU's) provided by this training are accepted by National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), National Board of Certified Counselors and towards recertification requirements for the National Registry of Group Psychotherapist as well as 16 hours towards certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy.
