Where does the term "psychological literacy" come from ? I like that. It's little like emotional bank account. Marcia karp
Hi Marcia! Thanks
I made up this term. It is like emotional intelligence.
I suggest that in the 20th century psychology was hobbled by its association with academic rat research, and then psychoanalysis, which for most people seemed weird, the old bearded psychiatrist behind the couch cartoon stereotype. Beginning in mid-century with Humanistic Psychology and T-Groups, very gradually the applications of psychology became more appreciated in education, business, and even finally religion.
This century I suggest that just as 100 years ago it became important for most folks to read and write (i.e., literacy), it is becoming important for most folks not to marginalize psycholgy as weird or gobbledeygook, but rather to learn to use it, learn skills of communications, interpersonal problem-solving and self-awareness.
I think psychology's actual penetration in the culture of both USA and England is more like, maybe, 10%, but it's growing. I see Morenian approaches as offering practical experiential tools for learning, and role theory as offering a user-friendly language.
I've been giving classes on this for senior citizens in my community at our lifelong learning program that I helped found 11 years ago. www.senioruniversitygeorgetown.org
Warmly, adam
