PSYCHOLOGY ACADEMIC ADVISOR AND INSTRUCTOR. The Department of Psychology at James Madison University is seeking a faculty member to serve as an academic advisor and instructor for our course in Life-Span Human Development, to begin August, 2009. This faculty member will be expected to serve as the initial academic advisor for students who declare the psychology major, including students who change majors or are admitted as transfer students. The advisor works with students to ensure that their decision to declare the psychology major is a sound one for them, and alternate career paths are explored. The advisor helps students make good progress towards their goals at a university in which only students who achieve a high level of academic success are permitted to complete the psychology major. The psychology adviser assists the Department Head prepare advising information for psychology majors including email, print, and web information. This faculty member will teach two large sections of life-span human development each semester. This is an 11-month position (mid-August through mid-June) and is a joint appointment between the Psychology Department and University Advising.
Candidates who demonstrate a strong interest in promoting undergraduate success through academic advising, strong interest in contributing to general education teaching, and departmental service will be highly ranked. The successful candidate will demonstrate that they continuously renew their expertise in psychology, and will be knowledgeable about best practices in psychology pedagogy, but they will not be expected to meet typical departmental expectations for production of scholarly works. Faculty rank will be Lecturer. This position is a continuously renewable position; non-tenure track.
Minimum qualifications include: 1) Completed master's degree in Psychology, 2) prior academic advising experience for psychology majors, and 3) prior college teaching experience and preparation appropriate for teaching a course in life-span human development.
The Department of Psychology is one of the most popular on campus and serves approximately 900 Psychology Majors.
