I was just emailing with a colleague and am moved to do a rah rah message about why I want to keep promoting Moreno's methods and ideas out in the world. The world is terribly oppressed with a fearfulness about exercising spontaneity and creativity (in part what Yablonsky called "robathy"), but also a wariness and under-valuation of playfulness and other qualities that are valued by our group.
Part of the reason for this pervasive fear is just the cultural lag so that folks are psychologically still living in the late-industrial late-modern era rather than getting on with the many paradigm shifts of the postmodern era. (This is not to say that I am an unqualified proponent of everything postmodernist---much of that subcultural movement is foolish. But some is wise. As with psychoanalysis---and even Moreno's writings---we must endeavor to avoid relying on the cultural conserve and exercise creativity in discerning the useful from the misleading.)
Another part of the reason, though, is that I think folks avoid thinking about that which they have few tools with which to think. It hurts their brains. The implications for this thesis is that it might help advance the evolution of consciousness by offering to the general population (not just therapists!) more tools. Psychodramatic techniques are great tools, and some of the concepts associated with psychodrama are also tools. (Kurt Lewin's line is that "nothing is as useful as a good theory." It's a mental map, and a map is a tool!)
So I think we have important tools to offer and we are challenged to go beyond the immediate task of just making a living (admittedly, a difficult one in these recessionary times), and put out a bit more to get our tools out there.
Rah rah, sis boom bah, cheerleader pom pom wave go team!
