Sociometry: Because you asked

Ann Hale annehale at swva.net

Dear Laure, thank you Cynthia, and Adam, for you requests for more info on what we do:

Donna Little and I have been co-leading workshops under the major heading of Sociometry and Healing for eight years, with sub-headings, such as the recent workshop focused on healing interpersonal connection.

Rather than jump into sociometric methods and procedures we work on creating an environment where the basic neccessities for being co-researchers are able to emerge and build a secure learning and experimental environment: these are receptivity, attunement, authenticity, courage, and compassion.

We provide time and structures (exercises) which will meet the expressed needs participants have in order to be fully present. Generally these are things we have thought of, but we begin with asking, then fulfilling.

We know the group members want to have an idea of who knows one another from before, who are people meeting for the first time; and what relationships in the group are on-going and exist in other contexts outside the here and now event.

Learning sociometry may be a priority; however, what has supremacy is an orientation which builds toward safety in being known and knowing in deep and complex ways.

We ask mid-way, "What would you regret if it did not take place before the end of the workshop?" The group likes to sort this out in action.

                                Skills

Recognizing and naming the criteria on which choices are being made in the moment and making those explicit. Sometimes group decision-making is values clarification.

Recognizing that numbers are important and that being able to adjust group size to fit the need in the moment is a sociometric act.

Act hunger is an indication to provide more access to roles of high value.

The role repertoire of the group is built by the group. Having new roles successfully emerge and be supported is cause for celebration and heightened spontaneity. Access to roles requires role relief, sharing the sociometric wealth, role training in a "mistakes allowed, even necessary" atmosphere.

Conflicts stem from our makeup, our differences, struggles to communicate effectively and have at the source the deep desire to be known. Punishment, blaming, and hiding are temporary states. When we facilitate emotional release the story tumbles out and we realize our stories intersect. Conflict and impasse rsolution have certain specific elements; however, we cannot expect these to fall into a specific order. Encounter requires a commitment to working toward resolution. Until we have that, the group holds the issue and all parties with compassionate regard.

We practice "Enduring traits" distributed in 2000 at annual ASGPP meeting during the opening plenary. If you want a copy I can email it to you. (annehale at swva.net)

We use the Canon of creativity to examine role taking (doing what is expected) role playing (seeing what we can get away with/something new and exciting which would benefit the organization (attuning to the client needs and the staff dreams) and role creating (hey!it works "would you just look at that!")

New writing: Not ready for distribution
"Acts of Integration: Interpersonal Neurobiology, J. L. Moreno's Science of Society and Psychodramatic Practice as Viewed through Daniel J. Siegel's Nine Forms of Integration." in preparation for publication.

"Authentic Choice-making Training Exercise" Donna and I will be testing this out soon.

"Linkages and differentiation within groups and individuals over time: Balanced and unbalanced moments in the group history" (a new model for understanding sociometric issues)

Yes. A compendium of exercises that people have used would be helpful. Every practitioner and student could begin now building their own, making notes about what worked and didn't and save it for one of those days when you need a spark or a "voice out of the past". Ann E. Hale
